Jonathan is a Senior Lecturer in Statistics at Massey University, the first totally blind person to gain full-time employment in such a position anywhere in the world. Jonathan has worked to improve the ability of blind university students across the world and across a wide range of majors, to successfully complete compulsory or optional undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics. This has seen him travel internationally sharing his knowledge and experience. The tools he has developed, and a raft of mainstream tools help him continue in his employment as a teacher, a researcher, supervisor of other researchers, a mentor, and a statistical consultant. As part of being National President of Blind Citizens NZ, Jonathan's work as a disability advocate has seen him play a leading role in the collection and evaluation of data and evidence disaggregated by disability status. He led NZ's civil society delegation to Geneva in August 2022 for the country examination on the implementation of the UN CRPD. In January 2022, Jonathan was announced as an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit, and in October he received the Beamish Memorial Medal from Blind Citizens NZ for his work as a blind statistician and an advocate working for blind people. Jonathan's other activities include being a father, a lifestyle farmer, and lover of good food, good company, and decent coffee.
